A former World Wildlife reserve in Nanhui was simply turned into agricultural land. Other areas in Lingang are starting to be covered with factories (Tesla) and residential buildings. And reed beds were uprooted and replaced by trees in a misguided government effort to meet Shanghai`s tree quotas.

From the perspective of the land ethic, the immoral aspect of the factory farm has to do far less with the suffering and killing of nonhuman animals than with the monstrous transformation of living things from an organic to a mechanical mode of being. That immoral something is the transmogrification of organic to mechanical processes. (

Old factories and mills are being torn down, and they can’t use house chimneys which have been lined or capped. They are among the most difficult birds for wildlife rehabilitators to raise, so if any fall down your chimney their best chance of survival is to put them back up there again. They’re Chimney Swifts.

In 2016, the Shanghai Wildlife Protection Management Station started the search for one, though progress has been slow. Ironically, Tesla currently builds a factory just a few miles from this important bird habitat, so much for electric vehicles and environmental protection.

I haven’t even been to all of the best national wildlife refuges for birding. I particularly enjoy birding national wildlife refuges, so I try to include at least one on each trip. With a country so vast and ecologically diverse, I figure I have at least a few more decades of trips to do.
