How many parrots talk to each other? of course that's not possible (due to biology or whatever); I just don't understand why more dog owners aren't giving their pets buttons, for example, or why the fact that parrots can pretty much talk to you and to other parrots with the language they learn isn't like.

Parrots captivate me more than any other bird family. With their strong flight and capability to disperse, parrots have managed to colonize almost every major island group from Tahiti to Mauritius to Dominica. There seems to be a parrot for almost any ecological situation. I am a self-proclaimed psittacophile.

Wing-barred Seedeater was formerly a common sight on Tobago but intensive trapping for the pet trade has extirpated the species from that island. Further afield, amidst crowds of raucous Orange-winged Parrots was a pair of Mealy Parrots. As per usual parrot protocol, they were difficult to detect once they alighted in the trees.

However, the typical birding experience for someone down here also includes a large menagerie of other species such as Orange-winged Parrot , Mitred Parakeet , Egyptian Goose and Nutmeg Mannikin. Their loud, descending whistles, gurgles and screeches are a common feature of parks and suburban neighborhoods in parts of Miami-Dade.

UNLESS that is you get yourself down to the internationally-renowned Tambopata Research Centre in southern Peru where literally hundreds of macaws (and other parrots) congregate around a 50 meter high clay bank. In addition to habitat loss, extreme weather, invasive species, hunting, and the illegal capture of birds for pet markets are major contributing factors. Descriptions are similarly compressed–no icons or silhouettes or physical descriptions. I did learn that not every bird with “Cuban” in the name is a Cuban endemic.
