It is also a good description of the birding in southernmost Florida. Sure, Miami and the Florida Keys do not boast any endemics ( ‘Cape Sable’ Seaside Sparrow is close) at the species level. Few birders realize how many warblers actually do winter in southernmost Florida — even long time birders within the state.

In other words, eBird is effectively a complete history of my birding experiences. Birding trips to Florida , New Mexico , and Texas are obvious too. For me, there was the Limpkin in Loxahatchee NWR in Florida, the Atlantic Puffin at Petit Manan NWR in Maine, the Falcated Duck at Colusa NWR in California.

Way down in the Florida they have the bizarre Snail Kite and the gorgeous Swallow-tailed Kite , both of which have made their way up as far north as North Carolina, though the former only once. We in the south are stuffed silly with kites. This is a bird that does not mess around.

However, few realize that this flat, densely populated county boasts one of the highest list totals of any county east of the Mississippi. Although they breed on the west coast of Florida, Snowy Plover is a rare stray to this part of the state.

Kirby Adams had a magical experience with his Best Bird of the Year and he blogged about it on his blog, Sharp Tern. While I had heard Yellow Rails in North Dakota in 2010, to see this Ohio Review Species fly, not once but twice, right in front of me was an incredible experience. I blogged about them here.
