After weeks of preparation (and not writing many 10,000 Bird posts), my wife and I are finally in Spain. Algeciras, Spain, to be specific — right around the bay from Gibraltar. Our trip to southern Spain is a work trip, so it was a week until I was able to get out and bird in form. Go if you possibly can.

Some weeks ago, I elaborated on some of my experiences on the eastern and southeastern ends. A Cocoi Heron flew over, presumably looking for a place to mount the classic sit-and-wait but instead found human observers. From Port of Spain, the journey can take approximately three hours.

Despite the fact that efforts are made to ensure they are not imprinted on humans, they are naturally confiding, even friendly. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience. Shooting remains a major threat to this population, for the Italians are still passionately keen on hunting.

It proved strong enough to take the many knocks and falls that a hard-used scope experiences during its lifetime. Perhaps it’s a basic human desire to dress things up.) A pair of Sarus Cranes , digiscoped at Baratphur, India. This was one of my better efforts I was often surprised at the quality of my digiscoped photographs.

I am heading towards the end of a two week family break in Andalusia, Spain as I write this and last week we jumped in the hire car and headed to a Spanish Town called Ronda for a day trip. There is beauty in these places but sometimes I have to look hard to find it.
