And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.

Though I have never had an issue with gluten, I have decided to lower my intake of it as an experiment, just to see if I feel any kind of difference. Charles Hobson Booger, III has been to I believe 4 vets (some several times) and hasn't been able to use his back right leg for 5 months (and yes, atrophy has set in).

So there was no traffic, no noise, and each day we awoke to the drama of the creatures who lived right outside our door. Now I have the drama of the feral cats and of course the greyhounds. It wasn't much--clusters of mushroom-like townhouses that are ubiquitous in Florida--but it was on a lake. And a dead end.

The underlying premise is that you can know what is right (such as me knowing what's right then eating cow flesh in the form of filet mignon for a year), but that by no means will necessarily manifest in your behavior. In contrast, abstract-rational entities, like personhood or rights, are not. What do you think?

I did go to Babies-R-Us for some odds and ends and here's the Animal Person-related experience. I chose a cow for Sky's first stuffed animal, and I hope that she will grow up to honor and respect the lives of cows the same way she will honor and respect the lives of greyhounds. Emily has taken to sleeping right next to wherever Sky is.
