He is an unabashed speciesist, putting humans on “a different moral plane from that of other animals” (11) due to various reasons, such as our “vastly greater capacity for symbolic language, culture, and ethical judgment” (11). He watched cockfighting and killed and skinned animals, but won’t eat veal. What about their horror?

What is the optimal temperature for the alleviation of suffering, for both humans and sentient nonhuman animals? I wish scientists would inform the public of all the consequences of global warming, so that the public can decide for itself whether to expend its scarce resources in preventing it. Change per se is neither good nor bad.

As Lukas informs us, a "beefsteak" is a raucous sexist feeding frenzy where 350 (all white) men sit shoulder to shoulder at long tables and gorge themselves on beefsteak soaked in a blood and butter sauce. In this New York Times story, author Paul Lukas glorifies a New Jersey custom known among the locals as a "beefsteak."

It brought the information out of the abstract and into the real, the visceral. Statistics come to life in the suffering of one dove or one mockingbird, the one needlessly stricken and dying for the sake of a personal choice. Anecdotally speaking, my own revelation came when the harm to birds was personalized.

People with higher IQs are presumably much more likely than people with lower IQs to possess accurate information as to which behaviors promote health and which behaviors promote disease. Given that belief, they no doubt also believe that it is wrong to knowingly contribute to unnecessary suffering.

When I informed Dave of what Emily and I were doing, he reminded me that some frogs are fatally poisonous to cats. As I skulked around my own house, all I could picture was Emily tearing Kermie limb from limb, then suffering a grisly death from ingesting the poison that ran through Kermie’s froggy veins.
