Here is a New York Times blog post about wolf hunting. This passage puzzles me: Unsurprisingly, I believe it is wrong to inflict pain and death unnecessarily on a creature capable of suffering. Peter Singer more broadly examines the moral standing of animals here.) Why does this belief not "compel us to be vegetarians"?

Whereas it once used to be argued, as by Newman , that the least human good compensates for any possible amount of animal suffering, the current doctrine is that it requires a considerable good to compensate for such suffering. Man-hunting is ruled out as a sport but not, at least with the same degree of unanimity, fox or bird hunting.

I simply believe that when animals are killed it ought to be for a good purpose, and in a manner that is respectful to their capacity to suffer.

This is the question whether the wrongness of cruelty to animals depends in part upon the animals' suffering, or whether it does not depend upon that at all, but only upon the bad effects upon human beings of cruelty to animals, and upon the badness of the human states of mind that such cruelty involves. If you like animals you will generally not want them to suffer and you won’t want them to go extinct. Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans. You cannot care about the individual, not at that level of suffering.
