Like when I was a kid and went to the mall with my family (BCP: Before Cell Phones), my parents would say: If we get lost, let's meet in front of the fountain. Beloved family pet Dalmatian, Pepper, is stolen, and after several weeks of searching is discovered to have been experimented on at a hospital and died on the table when researchers tried to implant her with an experimental cardiac pacemaker. To the Editor: While businesses that rent dogs may be well intentioned, they’re unlikely to benefit the overall welfare of pets, and may actually do harm to the individual dogs they “rent” (“ For a Temporary Best-Friend Fix, Rent a Dog (Kibble Included) for a Day ,” news article, March 30).

According to an article in the Guardian , “nearly a quarter of black swan families are parented by homosexual couples, the males sometimes mating with a female simply to have a chick. It seems they kept a pheasant as a pet for the chick. Once the egg has been laid, the female is chased away and the males hatch it.”

Also, the have families (as if other animals don't). Meanwhile, gorillas don't live in a traditional human family structure of mom, dad and kids, but somehow their family structure is an important reason for us to save them. We need language that doesn't support a divide between "pet" animals and everyone else.
