They packed up in June of 2013 and headed south from San Diego with the southern tip of South America as their destination. It is believed that the population in El Triunfo, Chiapas is stable, but throughout its range the population is still declining and the Horned Guan is an endangered species.

Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness. Hat-tip to Stella. As we left the long harbour there were plenty of inshore seabirds such as gannets, shags, gulls and terns. The proposal from U.S. Wicked, right?

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. In the only state in the Central Flyway that protects cranes from hunting.

Very little information was available at the time, so we hired a car and off we went, following the few tips we had managed to gather but mostly our noses. Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. . And wow, what a trip we had!
