Given that according to the HBW, the species prefers dense primary and secondary montane forests, the note that the bird also forages among kitchen waste (in the same HBW entry) seems somewhat incongruous. Fish & Wildlife Service has a web page for this species – but it contains absolutely no information.

But when taken as a whole, the impact of the Refuge System is truly profound, supporting population-level numbers of numerous bird species. The System also helps implement the Endangered Species Act and other federal conservation laws. Refuges in the Klamath Basin can host a million waterfowl a day during migration.

Our bogey or nemesis species, birds that we would opt to see over others. Back in the early days of birding with optics, I wonder if such wanted species would have been birds that were much more common in present times. It’s a reminder of how cool that bird really does look, that species and its red, crested counterpart.

For mankind to snatch away a species’ very existence is wrong on so many levels that I can’t begin to explain them. However, despite our best efforts to wipe them off the face of the earth, some of the more vulnerable species have managed to hang on. this species breeds. It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. With the proposed hunting seasons on sandhill cranes being discussed in Tennessee, Kentucky and Wisconsin, we must not forget the whooping crane, which travels and winters in the big sandhill crane flocks. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.

There is precious little ABA content for novice birders, and no single publication that covers the basics and presents an entry point for birding (and early ABA membership). But as far as I can tell, nobody advocates for birders, so lands are opened to hunting and fishing , but not birding, photography, and other non-consumptive uses.
