NPS also manages a diverse set of lands ( i.e., from the Arctic to the Everglades to the Mojave Desert to the Rocky Mountains ) that are used by many species of birds. Additionally, many federal lands have further protections.

These islands and their surrounding waters are protected as part of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. Invasive species , particularly rodents, have long been a problem on the Hawaiian archipelago. Midway’s birds are also protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. They are also disease vectors.

The initial solution was translocation, but there were a limited amount of islands on which you could place species without mammals being a problem, and they were only very small islands.

Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness. The final large petrel species is another gadfly petrel, albeit a much larger one than the Cook’s Petrel.
