All the inhabited continents except Africa have experienced bird extinctions; however the 2012 update of the IUCN Red List shows a startling, but not altogether unexpected, trend in that more and more of our bird species are facing extinction. That’s right, the overwhelming benefits to the environment and the economy are generated by non-consumptive uses of the refuges like wildlife photography, environmental education, wildlife observation and interpretation, not hunting and fishing. Look at the facts, lay your emotions aside and listen to reason—exactly the same reasoning that’s been so persuasive in convincing me that hunting cranes is the right thing to do. There was a lot of hunting for Bald Eagles—it is traditionally a game species. The Bald Eagle has the potential to be the Holy Grail of game birds.

99% of the commentary I have seen has been angry bordering on outright hostile, the few exceptions mostly being the kind of right wing “news” sites that love nothing more than tweaking a tree-hugging liberal like myself. Take the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. I’ve discussed this, at length, before.

Whenever the media report that someone has killed "an endangered animal" or "an endangered species," they too confuse an individual with a species. Any animal threatened with a gun or arrow is endangered. Hunters kill members of endangered species. To be consistent (and nonspeciesist).

The ferry is a very nice powered catamaran, that moves right along at 18-20 knots, but in 3-4 meter seas, that will make for a pretty bumpy ride. Imported rats, Short-tailed Weasels, or Stoats as they are know as here, 0possums, and feral cats have caused the extinction of literally dozens of bird species here in New Zealand.
