FWC officers arrived at a reptile facility and forcefully killed 29 reticulated pythons, 5 Burmese pythons, and 1 pregnant Boa constrictor. The FWC then proceeded to kill the total 34 pythons using a bolt gun. After killing Coffee's pythons, the FWC then committed another criminal act.

Many animals also display wide-ranging emotions, including joy, happiness, empathy, compassion, grief, and even resentment and embarrassment. It’s not surprising that animals—especially, but not only, mammals—share many emotions with us because we also share brain structures—located in the limbic system—that are the seat of our emotions.

How smart does a chimpanzee have to be before killing him constitutes murder? Like other mammals, they are capable of strong emotions. I do not claim to have the answer, but I think it is certainly worthwhile to raise the question: Why, exactly, all over the civilized world, in virtually every major city, are apes in prison?

They reside there at the top of a small mountain sanctuary as mythical as my first remembrances of ancient thunderbirds, living, mating, and raising young. Their hallmark: They don’t kill. I sensed his ability to hold a lot of information in his head while sorting through his emotions about what’s happening.

Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, Emotional Exhaustion these are all familiar topics to those of us who spend our time helping animals. One day about 10 years ago, I was in the process of transporting quite a few dogs to a rescue from a high kill shelter. They shared with me that they have the ability to sense our emotions and feelings.

We can treasure the cultural and historical bond between animals and domesticated animals only by ignoring the emotional bond. There is no happy ending for even the most humanely raised animal. And there is no good reason to breed, confine and kill animals for food unless we believe that economic benefit justifies killing.
