We had no information when the border would re-opened – perhaps within 2 days or perhaps within 5 weeks. Birds became my way to escape from the stressful feeling of being trapped and having no information when we could be released. We checked into a hotel available in front of the police blockade. Birds became my lifeline.

It toyed with my emotions for many minutes before it eventually flew off. The underside of the bird’s wings held all the information – it’s uniform grey/brown on Wilson’s but mixed with white for South American. How can one not love that face? After having a sip of some water, just before disappearing.

Second, reading about birds courting and parenting brings out the tendency to identify, which leads directly to anthropomorphism, the tendency to assign birds human emotions and thoughts. Although I generally like this type of graphic/information design, the number of boxes here sometimes seems to overpower the narrative text.

The director informed me that not only spit is apt to fly in such a situation; and at his urging we retreated. Like other mammals, they are capable of strong emotions. If they are "only" animals, if they are beasts which abstract not, then my comparison is a piece of sentimental foolishness. But chimpanzees can abstract.

They reside there at the top of a small mountain sanctuary as mythical as my first remembrances of ancient thunderbirds, living, mating, and raising young. I sensed his ability to hold a lot of information in his head while sorting through his emotions about what’s happening. My first view of them was at a distance.

I couldn’t help thinking this–me, the anthropomorphism hater– as I watched a pair of Philippine Eagles tend their nest, raise a chick, and tear monkeys apart in Bird of Prey: The Story of the Rarest Eagle on Earth , a well-crafted, beautifully filmed documentary with a mission. The Philippine Eagle has a kind face.
