Kinabatangan – Borneo’s Mighty River

The two star attractions for most tourists are Asian Elephants and Bornean Orangutans. I dipped on the elephants, but the river certainly delivered for orangutans. The river is a stronghold of the endangered Storm’s Stork , a stunning member of the family, and I saw at least one every day I was there. A side tributary.

A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. This game reserve has 900 elephants – the second largest population in South Africa, after the Kruger National Park with 13,000. Nowadays, the Savannah Elephants are shorter and with smaller tusks, often without them. Sniffing us.

Birding the Kruger Park (2): Bateleur area

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.
