The views were filled with scrubby, low vegetation, dramatic mountains, sheep herds, and sheep herders. The herders are nomadic groups that move sheep from place to place, staying in brick structures that dot the landscape. We traveled maybe ten miles on the only road before turning back around. Birding was tougher.

In front of us, the swaying green sea of rolling grassland with reed-overgrown depressions, an occasional herd of sheep and shepherds’ cottages, a tall-grass hillock (often an ancient burial mound), miniature Black Locust groves with their rookeries, a sunny sky… and the two of us with our eyes open wide.

Second they are reliant on Horseshoe Vetch on which they lay their eggs and on which the caterpillars feed. Rabbits are now thriving again after recovering their numbers and the Kent Wildlife Trust has implemented a grazing policy at Queendown Warren, with sheep and cattle, to supplement the rabbits’ efforts.

Each year tens of thousands of these gulls go to the islands and each pair will lay three eggs. Most of these clutches of eggs will hatch to produce three fluffy and adorable chicks. By way of an example take the Western Gulls that I studied on the Farallon Islands in California.

He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. And if you ever drive around an egg farm, hog farm, slaughterhouse, feeding lot, etc., Andrew from Good Honest Dollar had an excellent question.
