There are no Atlantic Puffins on Hog Island; they live locally only on Eastern Egg Rock, a painstakingly-restored seabird nesting colony which hosts three species of tern (including the endangered Roseate Tern ), Eider Ducks , Black Guillemots , and more, as well as 120 pairs of puffins. The park is managed for the benefit of the wildlife and made accessible for visitors with a footpath along the lakeshore and out onto spits that allow a closer approach to the heronry. The storks begin to arrive from August and will usually be sitting on eggs by October. Eggs often fall victim to the ubiquitous House Crow.

Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). In both cases, knots, which feed on the crabs’ eggs, can miss their peak refueling opportunity.

I haven’t even been to all of the best national wildlife refuges for birding. Ding Darling NWR, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Big Cypress National Preserve, Loxahatchee NWR, and Everglades National Park. I particularly enjoy birding national wildlife refuges, so I try to include at least one on each trip.
