What to look for in the AOU 54th supplement

10,000 Birds

'The AOU’s 54th supplement to its North American bird checklist will be out next month. Based on the proposals submitted to date , here are five proposed splits or lumps U.S. birders should watch for: 1. Whence ‘Barolo’ Shearwater? Will the ‘Barolo’ Shearwater of the Azores, Canaries, Selvages, and Madeira in the Atlantic be split from its current position as a subspecies of Little Shearwater ( Puffinus assimilis baroli )?

Thousands of Tricolored Blackbirds Saved Through Farmer/Conservationist Partnership

10,000 Birds

'All photos by Keiller Kyle, courtesy of Audubon California. For a birder, a sighting of a Tricolored Blackbird is a treat. After all, there are only a few hundred thousand left of these birds to gaze at, in a range that’s based mainly in California. For farmers, though, seeing a Tricolored may not be such a many-splendored thing—the birds form sizable flocks that often choose cultivated fields for their nesting spots, thus disrupting planting and reaping.

Nest Cam Welcomes Arctic Tern Babies to the World

10,000 Birds

'You may already know how awesome Arctic Terns are. Clocking more than 50,000 miles per year, the birds appear to have cornered the market on the world’s longest annual migration. It probably helps that they weigh less than 5 ounces! (You can learn more about their incredible journeys here.) . Perhaps because of threats to the ecosystems of the many places the Arctic Tern visits (Europe, Africa, South America, and North America), it may be on the decline.

Rainy Day Birder

10,000 Birds

'Perhaps my greatest handicap as a birder, aside from not driving, the whole being lazy thing, and the poor eyesight, is my +10 weakness against sun. I’ll stand in the cold and damp on, say, a pelagic trip until I just about fall over, hoping for one more good alcid. But even a moderate amount of sun causes me to wilt and turn pink, despite my copious investment in SPF 100 sunscreen and floppy hats.

Arctic Loon at Bonelli Park

10,000 Birds

'When you think of southern California in June there are a variety of things that could come to mind. Sunshine and surfing, deserts and wildfires, Hollywood and San Diego. What does not come to mind, even to a birder’s mind, is an Arctic Loon. Yet, somehow, on 31 May one was discovered on Puddingstone Reservoir, the large man-made lake that is the center of Bonelli Park, a nearly 2,000 acre expanse in San Dimas, just east of Los Angeles.

Where Are You Birding This Fourth Weekend of June 2013?

10,000 Birds

'Faced with this scene, which would you focus on: the beach, the ocean, or the rare jaeger Clare found in Broome ? All across North America and many other parts of the world, incarcerated children have granted their annual summer furloughs. All of our local beaches, parks, and malls will now echo with the shrieks and squeals of these exuberant miscreants.

Pomarine Jaeger in Broome

10,000 Birds

'Whilst we were busy birding in Southern and Western Queensland earlier this year avoiding rain it was blowing a gale in Broome. At the end of February Cyclone Rusty travelled down the coast dumping rain and blowing in birds from far out at sea and there were some good observations. Amongst the birds blown off course was a Pomarine Jaeger and we had not expected to see it on our return.

Back in Southern California

10,000 Birds

'Though I have made several trips to southern California over the eight years I have been birding almost every trip has been in December or January. The one exception, in 2006, when I had only been birding for one year, was in July. My novice birding skills and the heat of midsummer meant that I missed a bunch of likely birds and didn’t really appreciate the awesomeness that is birding southern California in breeding season.

Birding Flagstaff: A Green Detour

10,000 Birds

'After nearly a week of traveling through Arizona’s very dry southeastern corner, I decided to make a detour to Flagstaff for a change of pace, a change of scenery, and a chance at seeing an assortment of birds more typical of the Great Basin than the Sierra Madre of Mexico. Being from southern Florida, the thought of birding through verdant alpine meadows and rich pine forest with snow-capped peaks as a backdrop really appealed to me.

Climate Change and Birds

10,000 Birds

'I write a lot about climate change on my other blog , and so I don’t really feel a strong need to touch on this topic very often here. But when you think about it, climate change might be more important to the people who read 10,000 Birds than a lot of other groups of people. We should be expecting sea level rise. As the sea level rises, existing salt marshes and other coastal wetlands will become flooded; as salt marshes are inundated, they will become lower tidal zones, and new areas wi

Scheyville National Park

10,000 Birds

'When visiting Sydney I have in the past tended to visit birding sites near the coast and centre, by virtue of that being where my family is. But that is by no means the only birding to be found in Sydney, and on my last visit I was able to visit some new areas that had a different set of birds to those you’d encounter in coastal sandstone heath and rainforest.
