The amazonian basin is a very important area for Ecuador since it produces 500,000 barrels of oil per day which is the main source of income for our economy. We got our first looks at Scarlet Macaws , Orange-winged Amazons , Long-billed Woodcreeper , and at night we found the Tropical Screech Owl next to the dining room.

Rufous-winged Woodpecker. This northernmost representative of the Bangsia genus (like the Moss-backed Tanager of Ecuador) is locally common in mossy mature middle elevation rainforest of Costa Rica and western Panama. Owls (because they merit target status everywhere). Great Green Macaw. Blue-and-Gold Tanager. Scarlet Macaw.

Corey was lucky enough to meet Carlos while birding in Ecuador , where Carlos was dragooned into accompanying the horde of Queens birders for the day, an encounter that somehow didn’t turn him off of all things New York. Just keep an eye out for the Barred Owl perched on a Mini Cooper and that is where you will find him.

Like a shy stepchild, it’s always eclipsed by the wonders of Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, etc. Tintaya’s woodpeckers also nicely feature tree (and cactus!) Plate 97: Andean and partly Andean antshrikes, illustrated by Oscar Tintaya. Bolivia doesn’t come up much in discussions of birding travel.
