Today is the United Nations World Wildlife Day, a time to celebrate and raise awareness of the living world around us. For a split-second I was considering the white morph of the Booted Eagle… while noticing that they do not have long stork necks and that they were… Egyptian Vultures ! What this land-locked country lacks in endemic birds it more than makes up for in accessibility of tough species, numbers of birds and the overall wildlife experience. Specials include birds like African Pygmy Geese, Racket-tailed Roller and Western Banded Snake-eagle. We are currently filming in Botswana.

Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!

The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing. So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. The African Fish Eagle was a great first day bird.

Although they share some affinities with typical raptors (building eagle-like nests and possessing hooked bills) Secretarybirds have many characteristics that warrant them to be placed in their own genus, Sagittarius. As do a diverse suite of other wildlife from lions and zebras to ground squirrels and meerkats.

A Parks and Wildlife officer in Kalgoorlie told us that he called them the “dreadlock plant”, because that is just what they looked like! Among these bizarre plants we observed Orange Chats , Crimson Chats , Zebra Finch and Crested Pigeons. They are obviously a salt bush that loves the area. “Dreadlock plant”!

By the time you see this in the United States, I will have had a full week to explore this amazing area, and the wildlife that calls this home. We are on the go until usually around 1:30 give or take a herd of zebras blocking the road. I have managed to find two owls, the first was this pair of Verreaux’s Eagle-owls.
