Nisqually Delta Wildlife Refuge

This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. Unfortunately, while I was still living in the Seattle area, I had discovered the Nisqually Refuge to late, just weeks prior to setting sail south.

Can the Falcons Win the Super Bowl?

In Super Bowl XLVIII, the mighty Seattle Seahawks took a title, though they lost the following year to the aforementioned Patriots. nationalist, holy person, or some species of pirate has won it all. In the previous 50 Super Bowl match-ups, only twice has a football team named for a bird emerged victorious. Go Falcons!

Week four: We wrap up our stay in the US.

The end of this rather long road trip finds us here in Puyallup, Washington which is just south of Seattle. Over 200 species of birds can be found on the refuge, depending on the time of year. Northern Harriers, Peregrine Falcons, American Kestrels, and a fair number of Bald Eagles all can be found on the refuge year round.

Week 26: San juan Islands

The days for me to add to my Little Big Years species count are getting fewer and fewer, and with it, my budget. Such is the case when we got a call from our good friends Scott and Monica, inviting us to travel with them by sailboat up to the San Juan Islands, north of Seattle. Little Big Year species count: 834.

Week three, the road goes on forever.

We will cover nearly 3000 miles driving before we reach Seattle, and our final stop. I did manage to get a few Surf Scoters, my first Bald Eagle of the year, Pelagic Cormorants , and an unlikely pair of Western Grebes out in the middle of that rough water. Now we are on our way to Seattle, The Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually NWR.,

In reverse order, the medals were awarded for “most species seen in a country”, to Australia with 420, USA got the silver, scoring 556 while the runaway winner was Costa Rica with 646 species. Seattle–Terminal 91. Crested Serpent-Eagle – Spilornis cheela. Black Eagle – Ictinaetus malaiensis.
