Somehow, Steller’s Sea Eagle manages to look both fierce and slightly cartoonish. Georg Wilhelm Steller (1709 – 1746) was a German-born naturalist, though it seems he spent most of his (shortish) adult life in Russia, participating in the exploration of the North Pacific region. Back to the eagle.

Clicking on the blue url, I gasped, my eyes widened, the hair on the back of my neck stood up: the Steller’s Sea Eagle had been spotted in Maine, just over an hour from where I stood at that moment. I celebrated with them when they spotted the eagle.

According to eBird, the Spectacled Weaver can be identified by its “Zorro-like bandit mask surrounding the pale eye” I wonder whether – after Russia incorporated the Z sign into its country’s identity – Zorro movies will be avoided in the Western world. Kind of like Dresden, I guess.

The Southern Banded Snake-Eagle is listed as Near Threatened as there is only an estimated global population of 1000–3000 individuals. Due to a misunderstanding, this species is currently banned in Russia ( Swift Tern ). However, for beautiful birds such as the Red-capped Robin-Chat , some exceptions ought to be made.
