At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! The closer one raises her head, than lies back.

They are a commensal species, meaning that they are a wild animal that lives in close association with humans, not as a pet or as a farm animal but more like a parasite, to the extent that it is hard to find them in truely wild settings, and it is hard to find human settlements without them. because of collisions with vehicles.

Eagle-eyed Pat spotted a Lesser Black-backed Gull in nonbreeding plumage and other birders that week noted a Thayer’s Gull (which we may have seen too–I mean, who expects Iceland Gull in April?). They did flush eventually, but not because of humans. It was a Magnificent Frigatebird, the pirate of the seas, for that!

They reside there at the top of a small mountain sanctuary as mythical as my first remembrances of ancient thunderbirds, living, mating, and raising young. Condors, like all New World vultures, can disturb the human psyche. Their hallmark: They don’t kill. My first view of them was at a distance.

She has a captive-bred education bird named Xena, a Eurasian Eagle Owl. This summer Lisa raised three orphaned Common Ravens. They were not aware of wildlife laws, and thought they could raise and release them. We decided to raise them, and hoped they would wild up quickly if we followed the protocol for avoiding imprinting.

After one 3 year stint, they left with 131,405 specimens including birds, mammals, reptiles, plants and even human remains (which were only recently repatriated for burial in Africa!) Sundevall named Wahlberg’s Eagle and Wahlberg’s Honeyguide in his memory. In 1964, Clancey’s “Birds of Natal and Zululand” raised the total to 590.
