This has resulted in a reduction of the number of duck stamps sold. Sales of duck stamps have funded the preservation of wetlands and other wildlife habitat, which in turn has supported an increase in waterfowl populations. This has benefited both the waterfowl hunters and everyone else who likes ducks and their kin.

Dozens of WPAs are located in the Rainwater Basin , a region south of the Platte River in south-central Nebraska, at the narrowest point of the Central Flyway.

Funk WPA in Nebraska is one of the larger WPAs (nearly 1,200 acres) and it is an eBird hotspot. Birders who bird on National Wildlife Refuges should note that the 2018-2019 Federal Duck Stamp is now available (as of June 29, 2018). WPAs support huge populations of waterfowl and other birds.
