You will not find the Australian Wood Duck in the HBW, as they prefer the name Maned Duck for it. It is probably a rumor that writing a post about Australia and not mentioning Koalas is illegal, but why take the risk? It breeds in tree holes, presumably explaining the more commonly used name for it.

There have been good numbers of Australian Wood Ducks near the dam recently. Australian Wood Ducks and Black-shouldered Lapwings. Another small body of water well below the trail adds Pacific Black Duck , Grey Teal and Chestnut Teal to the list and then a lone Australasian Grebe. There was a Koala doing…nothing!

Herdsman Lake is very good if you only have access to public transport and will offer great birds like Blue-billed Ducks and Musk Ducks , but if you have a vehicle you should try and visit the Perth Hills National Parks and also Yanchep National Park. It is a short easy stroll and you can easily observe the Koalas doing very little!

Not only has there been a Latham’s Snipe there, but also Blue-billed Ducks , Australian Wood Duck , Pacific Black Duck , Grey Teal , Eurasian Coot , Australian White Ibis , Purple Swamphen , Australian Reed Warbler , Dusky Moorhens and many more species if you take the time to watch and wait.
