I first visited Kerkini and this bird-rich region of northern Greece 15 years ago, and have been returning regularly ever since. Kerkini does, of course, attract tremendous numbers of wintering wildfowl, including huge numbers of Common Pochard , by far the most numerous of the diving ducks.

I observed my first GS eagles in India some 8 years ago, then the first for Europe in Greece only last December , and finally I have them in my home country list. Simply, they are among the most beautiful ducks around. But through binoculars I noticed small raised crests and supercilia joining on hindneck – Woodlarks !

Today is the United Nations World Wildlife Day, a time to celebrate and raise awareness of the living world around us. Raising and lowering its head, like stretching. Actually, when I started to bird, my second ever duck, after the Mallard, was a Ruddy Shelduck! The closer one raises her head, than lies back.
