Like you, I’ve seen a lot of ducks in my life, but it wasn’t until 2006 that I first beheld the the wondrous waterfowl that I’d come to regard as my favorite duck, bar none – the White-cheeked Pintail. Like most southern ducks, this one is not dimorphic which means the males and females are equally enchanting.

Best Bird of the Year 2014

The experience, the place, and the bird combine to make this my BBOTY. I had enough time to warn my husband that it was headed our way and we ducked. Seeing more that 640 species throughout North America, South America, and Asia revealed many special species, but cotingas are often first among equals in discussions like these.
