Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. Empty no more, the ponds were now brimming with ducks of all creeds and persuasions – it was spectacular. If there were such a thing as a Periodic Table of Ducks we went from hydrogen to uranium: every duck imaginable was there.

We just pulled back, and we pulled back, and we pulled back, and ended with this tiny, tiny dot in the middle of the wide expanse of the Artic Ocean, and it was a very emotional moment for me. Then, of course, I’m a sucker for things that make me laugh, so I loved the jumping mandarin ducks, the mandarin ducks flinching and flying.

Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck. This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month.
