For some reason that I do not quite understand myself – given that I really rather dislike children and am not too positive about the rest of humanity either – I recently put up a little display of bird photos inside my Shanghai compound, which I share (as the only foreigner) with about 1700 Chinese.

Fortunately, some birds like this rather wonderful Chinese Babax family with chicks let me get close enough – and in decent enough light – that smoothening the background was not much of an issue. A Red-billed Blue Magpie pretending to be a wet dog. It feeds newly hatched chicks entirely with beetles and grasshoppers.

What seeds does a Baird’s Sparrow eat? Non-human beings have traditionally thought of on a basically immoral level…they lack any intrinsic values, are incapable of thoughts and emotions, and are only worth how good of a coat they make or how good they taste. “Spooked” is a bit of a strong word as I was very likely the first human this bird had ever seen and it stuck around for quite a while merely five metres away from me. We’ll give Duncan a pass on this one… A sparrow? Yes, Dragan chose a sparrow. Yes, Dragan chose a sparrow. Another sparrow?

I come from a large family: five sisters, two brothers and almost everyone has kids. Most of my family lives in Indiana, but thanks to social media we can easily keep in touch. Case in point: some of my family members have become active with feral cat colony organizations. Well played, older sister, well played.
