Has anyone, as a child, ever hurt animals like pelting stray cats and dogs with stones? But now, I would give my life to protect them. As well, a part of me doesn’t want to be relieved of this burden, as I feel I’m undeserving of being freed from the emotional pain caused by my past actions. I used to do this when I was a kid.

Last January, I was on a road trip and wanted protection as a solo female. I decided to rescue a dog in desperate need, and planned on finding a home for it after my road trip was over. Well, the first dog I went to see was scheduled to be euthanized that week. I just wanted to share the power of dogs with everyone.

It’s a rough world for people who appreciate them, rougher still for those who spend time and money trying to protect them, roughest of all for those who take in the injured and orphaned and try to save them. The job of consoling me fell mostly to my dog. Tiny nestlings were safe around him.
