Not a great place for a family vacation, though I think Duncan will disagree. Phillipps’ Field Guide (I’ll be using this shortened form of the title) covers 673 avian species, including 59 endemics, and 53 species that have not been documented yet for the area but which may show up in the next few years.

Think about it–how do you document the behavior of birds that spend years flying (or swimming) and feeding and, apparently, sleeping above or within the deep sea? They walk and toboggan to open water about 50 miles away and then hunt for food until it is time to come home and feed the chick.

I also enjoyed reading the company histories of familiar brands like Duncraft, Kaytee, Droll Yankee, and Wagner all of which started as family companies, some as offshoots of other businesses, some as the result of clever inventions. The authors’ interest expanded into this book, published by Texas A&M University Press.

The USA’s only truly indigenous parrot was wiped out by a combination of factors, although direct persecution through hunting seems to have been the major contributor. Well-represented exotic families include starlings, ducks and doves and there are also many more individual species that now thrive here.
