I took home a few of the pellets and found that the owls were feasting on grey squirrels and cottontail rabbits. I showed him the pellet and he felt the feathers were definitely Blue Jay feathers, specifically from the crest, but they did not match the beak in the pellet. He can ID just about anything from a small part or bone.

Backyard Beneficiaries

I’ve noted at least nine species of reptiles and amphibians, even our native opossum and squirrel. At night, we keep our eyes out for the passage of the neighborhood Barn Owl , oftentimes a Tropical Screech-Owl would hunt insects from a low perch on our almond tree. Of course, various species of bats as well.

Birding the Trinity Hills

Raptors were in no short supply, and in addition to a Savanna Hawk , Grey-lined Hawk , and an extremely brief view of a Double-toothed Kite as it careened over the canopy later on, we saw a couple Broad-winged Hawks characteristically hunting from a low perch. Definitely a place that warrants multiple visits. Broad-winged Hawk.
