On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

And here in Europe, they are the real deal, an indigenous species and not domesticated animals gone wild. They may have been disturbed by the presence of hunters in the Danube backwaters. The only wildcat I found was illegally killed by hunters during closed season. I think all were males, at last two huge ones certainly were.

Wild Turkeys were a species of concern in the 20th Century and several reintroduction programs were tried, including the release of domestic turkeys (that didn’t work so well). There’s also another issue–the spring turkey hunting season. Turkey hunters…not so much. That usually involves a ghillie suit.

A silhouetted Golden Eagle in flight appears on all current bottlings by Ardmore, and over the years, the same species has occasionally appeared on various products by Scottish distilleries like Glenfarclas and Mortlach. Swans swim on a small pond on the distillery grounds and deer and otters can be found by a trail that runs beside the burn.

Mostly the ducks were Red-breasted Merganser and Greater Scaup , the two most prevalent species on the pond, but there were a few other birds mixed in as well. To the Editor: In “ Hunting Deer With My Flintlock ” (Op-Ed, Dec. 26), Seamus McGraw says he has a responsibility to kill deer because there are too many. He has volunteered to kill a deer cruelly, ineptly and with an outdated weapon that causes additional suffering to the deer. Hunters like him.
