The class-action lawsuit accuses companies of slaughtering thousands of cows just to decrease supply. Animal rights group Compassion Over Killing was the first to uncover the alleged systematic slaughter of healthy dairy cows in California.

THE DUTCH parliament has voted overwhelmingly to ban the ritual slaughter of livestock. However, Jewish and Islamic groups which can prove animals do not suffer more during ritual killing than in an ordinary slaughterhouse will be able to apply for permits. Excerpted from the Irish Times.

Australian Dairy Farmers says calves can be left unfed for 30 hours before slaughter but the RSPCA says the practice is "cruel". Animals Australia has a video on its website showing calves being roughly dragged off utes and thrown to the ground.

Nocera tells us that most slaughterhouses don’t mistreat animals or funnel sick downer cows into the food chain. If Mr. Nocera actually had such clairvoyant powers over the meat-packing industry, why didn’t he put them to use last autumn and blow the whistle on the Westland/Hallmark slaughter plant? Oh, really?

In fact, a whole lot of semi-vegans can do much more for animals than the tiny number of people who are willing to give up all animal products and scrupulously read labels. Farm animals also benefit from the humane farming movement, even if the animal welfare changes it effects are not all that we should hope and work for.
