We also got an extra stop in Dallas, Texas (Hey wasn’t I just here) but again no birds could be added, unless I count the House Sparrow flying around inside the terminal. When I was doing some very quick, last minute research on the area, a photo of the beautiful Pied-imperial Pigeon popped up on one of the eBird.org pages.

Most of the time, I know enough about an area, or have done some research into what is found there, that I am pleasantly surprised at best. In about 10 days, we leave for our last (at least up to now) out of the US trip, with 21 days scheduled in Costa Rica. Not so with our visit to Bosque de Apache NWR in southern New Mexico.

While studying, he also worked on various conservation/research projects (parrots, wagtails, vultures, and anything else that flew) and ringed thousands of birds. Dale studied scarlet macaws, and worked in their conservation, for three years in southern Costa Rica, followed by a year in the Caribbean working on Whale Sharks.

This led to a correspondence with Spencer Fullerton Baird, then assistant secretary of the Smithsonian, the mentor of many naturalist/scientists of Ridgway’s generation, himself a disciple of John James Audubon, and, yes, the Baird of Baird’s Sparrow. Baird, Brewer, Cory, Bicknell, and Worthen all make appearances.

My first tropical birding trip was to Costa Rica when I was 8 and the Jabiru was at the top of my list even then, but sadly none were encountered. It seemed like a really fun way to spend the day! John Marvin has had a near lifelong wish to see a Jabiru. The Brazilian bird I would most like to see is the Jabiru.
