Mount Taranaki

The dual name is something of a New Zealand compromise, Taranaki being the old Maori name and Mt Egmont being the name given by Captain Cook in honour of some long dead admiral that supported him. Both names are official within New Zealand, and you’ll hear different people use different names.

As I said last week , I’ve decided to try and knock off a few of the New Zealand endemics and specialities that I haven’t seen before over the coming year, and the first place that sprung to mind was pretty close, just across the Cook Strait in the Marlborough Sounds. Spotted Shags are endemic to New Zealand.

People, they argue, are more important than bugs, and besides, the money will help pay to protect other conservation land. Shot a rhino? Unsustainable hunting leads to extinction.

Week 8: Wrapping up the South Island, and more!

Our trip thru the South Island of New Zealand, is coming to a close, and in finishing the trip, we complete a “figure 8” pattern. Our last day on the South Island was in Picton, where we were to catch the Blue-Bridge Ferry out through Queen Charlotte Inlet, and across Cook Straight to Wellington.
