Flock to Marion

10,000 Birds

A family motel and passion for responsible ecotourism brought her home to the Oregon Coast where she and her husband, Erik, adventure and record a podcast ( Hannah and Erik Go Birding ), created in an effort to inspire others to get out and bird. Marion has a fascinating history with invasive species. I love to go on cruises.

Birding the Drakensberg, South Africa

10,000 Birds

In fact, this is probably a species that has substantially expanded its original range through the pet shop route and the resulting escapees. Cute looks and adaptability as a cage bird conferring an evolutionary advantage. The HBW describes the species as “striking”, which is well deserved. A pity I cannot draw.

Far From Land: The Mysterious Lives of Seabirds–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

It’s not often that we have the opportunity to glimpse the home life of albatrosses, nor of any seabird species. For most seabird species, the male takes the first shift and the male and female then alternate, but the period of time for each shift varies according to species. What about incubation shifts?

The Case for Adding the U.S. Territories in the Caribbean to the ABA Area

10,000 Birds

Both Puerto Rico and the USVI have active birding communities that are currently excluded from full membership in the ABA family. The USVI are smaller and have fewer habitats and, as a result, fewer bird species. All Americans Should be Full Members of the ABA Family. Because it is much larger, this will focus on Puerto Rico.

Best Bird of the Year 2013

10,000 Birds

My best bird of the year is based on the sighting rather than the species. Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience. Only trouble is, which of the seven species I saw this year do I pick?
