Now, here in Colorado this is the season for the high-country birds. This is my time of year to explore thin air and look for unique Colorado breeders. Brown-capped Rosy-Finch This larger finch can be found in summer feeding on the edge of snow fields usually above 11,400 feet, which is timberline here in Colorado.

As of mid-November 2021, the Collaborative had submitted more than 4,200 checklists (up from 1,700 in 2018) and has observed 691 species in the United States (up from 618). Thus, there are now seven states with 200+ observed species. The state with the largest increase was Arizona , with 139 species added.

With Wyoming and South Dakota in our rear view mirror, we look toward Colorado, and a hot spot I have been anxious to visit. Birding and Safari-ing South Africa with the ABA

There were birders from a wide cross-section of the United States: Colorado, Ohio, Idaho, Iowa, Wyoming, Washington State, Pennsylvania, New York State, New Jersey, California, Texas, Florida. Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant.

Little Big Year Week 33: Yellowstone

Last week we were in the Teton Valley, getting ready to head over to Wyoming, and Yellowstone National Park. In talking to the local guides, and Rangers, they all agreed that they had not been seeing too many species around in the last couple of weeks. Our last night in Wyoming was spent at the historic Terry Bison Ranch.

The heat map is revealing: Unsurprisingly for a site founded and run by two New Yorkers (one of whom literally wrote the book on birding New York), the Empire State boasts the highest number of species (316).
