I had never been to Colombia before so didn’t know the best birding spots in the vicinity of the capital. Although paramos can’t boast of having a high species count, nevertheless they easily compensate for that with very singular and most interesting species. The paramo was starting to reveal its curiosities.

That’s because this fascinating part-Caribbean, part-south American country holds well over 800 species of avifauna making it without doubt one of my top three countries in all of the continent to visit. Ok, maybe not the vampire bat…but some of the more “cuddly” species are actually quite easy to see.

If the wind carries them on, maybe they will go to Panama, or even make it to Colombia. At the moment, night excursions to Poas are limited by pandemic driving restrictions but I can still surmise about the species flying overhead. For a bird with resources and long wings, those destinations are just a bit further down the flyway.

Even so, in the short term, it can be hard to accept that hundreds of species are close to being extinguished from this irreplaceble tapestry of life, that hundreds more are headed for the same eventual abysmal stop. We would see how species that used to be common, even abundant, became remnants of their former, robust populations.

Because of that, the bird has a manure-like odour and is only hunted by humans for food in times of dire need” [ Source ].

The species is being re-introduced in Colombia and Ecuador where the condors are either locally extinct or persist in very low numbers. The cause of this decline is not necessarily poisoning by humans, but this is just a contributing factor. It is estimated that only a few thousand birds remain in the wild.

But how birds use these different senses, like the diversity in bill size and shape, varies almost as much from species to species. Sword-billed Hummingbird , Colombia Bills come in all shapes and sizes. Chickens come in at around 24, pigeons have around 40-50 and some duck species may have a whopping 400.
