I had never been to Colombia before so didn’t know the best birding spots in the vicinity of the capital. The whole landscape seemed like something from a Jules Verne novel with weird-looking plants and strange creatures never gazed upon by human eyes. Military checkpoints outside of cities are a common thing in Colombia.

Giant anteaters, giant otters, giant armadillos, giant river turtles, giant termites and giant waterlilies that can sustain the weight of a human baby! Whilst Guyana doesn’t boast the number of species of larger countries like Peru, Brazil and Colombia, one needs to consider the size difference between these countries.

If the wind carries them on, maybe they will go to Panama, or even make it to Colombia. We don’t see so many on the ground but with both Yellow and Black-billed hightailing it to South America, you know that their long wings are carrying these caterpillar gourmands far overhead and straight on to Colombia.

This bird, of the Turdus family, can be found on the western slopes of Ecuador and Colombia. I was also shocked by the fact that playback scared the bird while the human whistle produced by Luis Ajilla father attracted the bird within photographing range.

… – part 2 – Once I finish this writing, with a strange mix of emotions I will put the Lynx field guide Birds of Colombia to the bookshelf for the first time, more than half a year after I received it. Because of that, the bird has a manure-like odour and is only hunted by humans for food in times of dire need” [ Source ].

The species is being re-introduced in Colombia and Ecuador where the condors are either locally extinct or persist in very low numbers. The cause of this decline is not necessarily poisoning by humans, but this is just a contributing factor. It is estimated that only a few thousand birds remain in the wild.

Some ways to help this incredible bird include supporting the Macaw Recovery Network , any efforts to protect and reforest habitat from eastern Honduras to eastern Panama and northern Colombia, and never buying a Great Green Macaw. Yellow-naped Parrot (Amazona auropalliata).
