Australian Pelican ( Pelecanus conspicillatus ) at Centennial Park, Sydney No pelicans were recorded in New Zealand when the Europeans first arrived, and it wasn’t until 1930 that fossils of pelicans were discovered in a cave in central North Island.

There are owls in New York City. Big owls: Barred Owls on Riverside Drive and down the path from Harlem Meer, a Great Horned Owl in Central Park’s Ramble. The NYC owls have little to do with the book in front of me except that it too is about birds and people. But–is that it?

I’ve never been on an “owl prowl” before, and was thrilled that the one we joined turned up the promised quarry, and then some. Great Horned Owl babies peering out from their nest! Barn Owl babies peering out from their box! A Burrowing Owl peering at us from beside his burrow, and then making a hasty escape!

We’re passing the Dasada village where shop owners and artisans are opening their doors, collecting rubbish in the street and burning it, while standing around those small fires and warming themselves up. Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus. Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus. And how can one stay annoyed after that?

A rundown of my year is below, broken down into the integral parts which, collectively, allowed me to see what I saw. I did finally get Snowy Owls in Queens , even if they did cause a bit of controversy. I even chased after a Barred Owl ! Finally, my 2012 Year List easily exceeded the 500 species I had hoped to see.
