Horrible Hybrids

Further research revealed the Bird Hybrids blog ( [link] ) has several revealing photographs of this (and many other) hybrids. I’ve seen some weird-looking hybrids in duck collections. Many years ago a friend of mine kept a small but varied collection of ducks and geese. These two Racklehahns were quite different.

The mistake has its origins in 1878, when ornithologists Henry Tristram and Allan Hume both collected specimens of what was then described as Hume’s owl. As for the results of the race, it sure was a close one. The Reservoir Birds from Spain and the Finnish team, Northern Lights, shared 3rd place with 163 species.
