Horrible Hybrids

I’ve seen some weird-looking hybrids in duck collections. Many years ago a friend of mine kept a small but varied collection of ducks and geese. My most memorable encounter with a non-wildfowl hybrid was some years ago in Finland, when I was taken to a Blackgrouse lek where two c**k Racklehahns were present.

The mistake has its origins in 1878, when ornithologists Henry Tristram and Allan Hume both collected specimens of what was then described as Hume’s owl. A case of mistaken identity, this rare and secretive species, was only officially described to science in the last year. As for the results of the race, it sure was a close one.
