His work is the foundation of the Macaulay Library video collection. I began a program for PBS on a group of young kids in a small town in South Dakota. The second responded as I would- with immediate concern and compassion. On Mother’s Day, an F2 Tornado hit the small town of Delmont, South Dakota.

By collecting data and following individual birds it is possible to provide data to both governments and environmental groups to help protect the habitat both here and overseas into the future. Oh, yes, I have a little gull amongst my collection of souvenirs! She is actively involved in fieldwork and maintaining the database.

Currently she does full time voluntary work for the local Australasian Wader Study Group, which aims to understand and analyze the factors determining shorebird numbers in a rapidly changing world. Collectively, they’re referred to as the Herring Gull complex. To recap however, grouping them by their slight variation in body size between 53 and 67cm in length (21 to 26in): The biggest two are Yellow-legged and Caspian gulls, distinguishable by the presence or absence of brightly-colored (yellow) legs.
