A wildlife rehabilitator friend, newly licensed, recently called to ask if he could feed a recovering Turkey Vulture anything besides defrosted rodents. Normally I feed vultures, as well as hawks and owls, defrosted mice and rats. He then ate a screech owl, a robin, two squirrels, a mourning dove, three chipmunks, and a rabbit.

A few weeks ago I led a field trip to Butte Valley Wildlife Area. It was a destination I had never experienced so I made a few phone calls and got some information from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife agent who actually runs both the Butte Valley and the Shasta Valley Wildlife Areas, which are about 25 miles apart.

Lots of squirrels, chipmunks, deer, rabbits. I think I heard an owl once last winter. the last part is raptor behavior but I can't imagine what kind of bird would be small enough to choose this space when there's 300 yds of chain link fence right there, and I've yet to see a dead squirrel, rabbit or chipmunk.
