And people wonder why I'm so disappointed by humans. A farm-animal breeder who ran what a prosecutor called "the zoo from hell" was convicted Tuesday of animal cruelty. The animals included ducks, chickens, guinea hens, rabbits, sheep, dogs and cats.

There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. It should surprise no one that someone brought horses, or goats, or chickens. But hedgehogs? Greenfinches?

Wild animals and native plants have a particular place in nature, according to the land ethic, which domestic animals (because they are products of human art and represent an extended presence of human beings in the natural world) do not have. as is the humane ethic.

At the same time, reading When Birds Are Near: Dispatches From Contemporary Writers , edited by Susan Fox Rogers, set me wondering about viewers’ reactions, especially New Yorkers who have never seen an owl outside of a zoo or a picture book. But–is that it? The two stories about New York City are personal favorites, of course.

Wisdom is not charging people extra to see your reconstituted Jurassic Park style dinosaur zoo when all you’ve got is a barn full of chickens. Humans have always classified organisms in a variety of ways, depending on need. Some sort of ancient fish-with-feet is the ancestors of humans. Think about it.

Plus, I mean, it’s a giant chicken-looking thing that’s actually related to ducks… with that kind of identity crisis going on, what’s not to love? I worked with a pair of motmots at a US zoo and fell in love with their vibrant colors and unique tails. Karla Lucas feels the same way about Spix’s Macaw !
