Vegetarian food seems less interesting, or maybe it is just more difficult to capture on a photo … Many birds seem to regard Nanhui as a seafood restaurant. Cattle Egret. But I am interested in what birds eat at my local patch here at Nanhui in Shanghai. The variety is similar to the food available in a Cantonese restaurant.

Bologna La Grassa may revel in the indulgence of its Parma ham, lasagne, and rich, fatty ragùs, and Venice may boast the bounty of the sea, but the rugged, hilly homeland of the ancient Etruscans is undoubtedly cattle country. Of course, a land of beefeaters needs butchers. Good birding and happy drinking!

Locals being vegetarians, why are there no birds? Actually, despite the fact that central Asian steppes cover huge areas, Sociable Lapwings breed only around nomadic cattle herders’ settlements, which signifies that this species has evolved alongside wild ungulates, such as Blackbuck and Saiga antelopes, which kept the grass short.

There are two approaches a vegetarian might take in arguing that rearing and killing animals for food is morally offensive. A vegetarian of the first sort has no grounds for objecting to the eating of animals—molluscs for example—too rudimentary in their development to feel pain. Or he could object to the killing itself.

But keep in mind that many lactovo vegetarians care about how animal products are produced, not just the fact that they are animal products.
