If any "drastic measures" are employed, they are to remove animals from suffering, not to impose our dietary choices on others. Of course, Lobo is missing the point entirely.

To avoid this complication, Martin should have stipulated that no suffering is involved in the production of animal legs. Suppose someone enjoys drinking the blood of cattle and hogs. If you like animals you will generally not want them to suffer and you won’t want them to go extinct. Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans. You cannot care about the individual, not at that level of suffering.

If beef cattle who could not feel pain were developed, then it would be permissible to eat them. KBJ: Martin seems to think that people who abstain from meat on the ground that meat-eating causes pain would not eat “beef cattle” even if they could not feel pain. Killing a hog can be avoided. But the question remains.
