Years ago, I became a wildlife volunteer and advocate because of a cat who caught a bird. Now, he lay frightened and ruffled in my hands, his tail tattered, his feathers damp from the maw of a cat named Puck. Back then, I didn’t know enough about birds, but I knew a lot about cats. It’s tribal and familial.

Brown Honeyeaters are the most common of the honeyeater family in our garden and when a goanna is present they chatter away and we have to look to see what is bothering them. They want the water and they are not going to let a cat interfere with what they need to survive. Common Tree Snake coming forward to investigate us.

When that animal is available, I am notified the next time a pet matching my search is added on Adopt-a-Pet.com. We are calling the idea “Social Petworking.”

Occasionally a chick will fall and be released back into the food chain by the alligators, but on the whole, the birds get a good deal providing that they build their nests beyond the jumping capability (as much as 5 feet as demonstrated in the “Jumperoo Show&# ) of the reptiles. This has happened before, Archaeopteryx and the bird family tree have had an often tenuous relationship. Cats have eight on each side on top, and seven on the bottom. That’s what Archaeopteryx is. Recently, the news came out that beloved Archaeopteryx is not really a bird ancestor. In fact, you have to get downright cladistic.
