Are there so many birds that cats don’t matter?

10,000 Birds

For instance, assume (and I will NOT stand by this number, it is just one I’ve heard here and there) that kitty cats in America kill 50,000,000 birds a year. Hardly any Sandhill Cranes are killed by domestic (including ferrel domestic) cats. In fact, there are certainly a few cats killed by hawks every year. Raptors either.

Animal Ethics

It is no more acceptable to confine 60 hens for their entire lives in a cage that you report is “about the size of a Ford F-150 pickup truck’s flatbed” than it would be to treat 60 cats similarly. Compassionate consumers can take a stand against this cruelty by choosing vegan options.

Sea Snakes of Northern Australia

10,000 Birds

Speaking of pregnant snakes, do sea snakes lay their eggs ashore like sea turtles or do they keep them internally until the young are ready to hatch/ be born, like some sharks? These do lay eggs on land and are (reasonably) mobile once they hit the beach. It seems like there is great diversity in this continent. Wicked, right?

Bird Surprises

10,000 Birds

This happened to me recently on a birding trip, with somewhat egg-on-the-face results. Back in the truck, working on our back spasms, we drove a hundred yards south, then turned east, passing a farm house which had feeders out front, and where a flock of Bohemian Waxwings had been reported that same morning. Wicked, right?

The Gap Between Wildlife and the Animal Rights Movement

10,000 Birds

The animal rights movement is (rightly) closely associated with protesting things like factory farming, dogfighting, etc…basically, the mistreatment of animals. Rats had previously preyed on eggs and young of practically every defenseless seabird on the island, and had taken to even attacking adult albatross as they sat on their nests.

When conservation and animal rights collide

10,000 Birds

Each year tens of thousands of these gulls go to the islands and each pair will lay three eggs. Most of these clutches of eggs will hatch to produce three fluffy and adorable chicks. By way of an example take the Western Gulls that I studied on the Farallon Islands in California.

On "EATING ANIMALS" by Jonathan Safran Foer

Animal Person

The good news is that if you know someone who needs to be schooled on all of the sordid details of factory farming, and appreciates good writing, this is a great book. Factory farming considers nature an obstacle to overcome" (34). Ever, in fact. He always refers to himself and his wife and his child as "vegetarian."
